Thomas Smitham currently serves as the Deputy Coordinator for Programs in the Bureau of International Information Programs.  His most recent assignments were as Minister Counselor for Political Affairs at the U.S. Embassy in Mexico City and as Charge d’Affaires, U.S. Embassy Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago. 

From 2008 to 2012, he served as chief of staff to the Under Secretary for Economic Growth, Energy, and the Environment in the Department of State.  Prior to returning to Washington, Tom headed the energy and environment unit at the U.S. Mission to the European Union in Brussels from 2005-2008. Just before his assignment in Brussels, he served as a Special Assistant in the office of the Under Secretary, covering Western Hemisphere issues. 

From 1999-2000, Tom was seconded to the British Foreign Office, where he worked on European Union economic issues. This was followed by an assignment to the economic section at the U.S. Embassy in London. Prior assignments in the Foreign Service include Mexico City, Lima, the Vatican, and Rome. Tom received a master's degree in international affairs from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University and a BA in history from the University of California, Berkeley.
